阿拉斯代尔·麦金泰尔

麦金泰尔曾在伦敦玛丽王后大学接受教育，后来在曼彻斯特大学和牛津大学取得了文学硕士学位。1951年他来到曼彻斯特大学任教，也由此开始了他的学术生涯。1969年来到美国之前，他曾先后在英国的利兹大学、埃塞克斯大学、牛津大学教书。在美国，他也四处漂泊，在许多大学都留下了他的足迹。以下是他曾担任的职位：

从2000年到现在，他一直是美国印第安纳州圣母大学哲学系的奥布赖恩高级教授（Rev. John A. O'Brien Senior Research Professor）以及伦理学和文化中心的终身高级研究学者。同时他也是杜克大学名誉教授。2005年4月他被选为美国哲学会成员。

麦金泰尔一生共结过三次婚。1953年到1963年他与安·皮尔瑞（Ann Peri）结婚并育有两个女儿。1963年到1977年他与苏珊·威兰斯（Susan Willans）结婚、育有一子一女。从1977年，他与同为圣母大学哲学教员的林恩·乔伊（Lynn Joy）成婚。

麦金泰尔在道德哲学和伦理学领域有突出的贡献。他认为，当代西方社会的道德危机，来源于一种严重的道德无序状态。道德的立场与原则，变成了纯主观的选择和情感的表达。在他的代表作《德性之后》中，他追溯历史，认为这种状况来源于对亚里士多德哲学中的目的论和德性论的抛弃。他指出，当代约翰·罗尔斯与罗伯特·诺齐克之间的道德争论，就是由于缺少了亚里士多德式的德性，丧失了一种“应得赏罚（deserve）”的观念，他认为应该回归到传统意义的德性论上。
