依鱼类分类学研究网站deepfin.org的分类法[1][2]，本目属于真棘鳍类鲈形亚类卵附系。
本目相當于鳚亞目（Blennioidei J.P.Müller, 1844），过去被归类于鲈形目之中，但分子遗传学的研究显示此类群更接近银汉鱼目、鳉形目等，尤其与喉盘鱼目更是姐妹群，因此将本目独立出来与喉盘鱼目组成鳚形总目。
